Order of Christian Initiation
Interested in Becoming Catholic?
Maybe you have been attending Mass with your family. Maybe you were baptized Catholic but never received all of the Sacraments of Initiation. Maybe you come from another Christian tradition and have begun to feel drawn to the Catholic Church.
Or maybe you simply have questions.
Wherever you are on your journey, you are welcome here.
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process through which adults learn about the Catholic faith, deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ, and discern whether God may be calling them to become Catholic.
There is no pressure and no expectation that you have everything figured out before you begin. OCIA is a place to ask questions, learn, pray, and discover more about the Catholic faith.
Who Is OCIA For?
OCIA may be for you if:
- You have never been baptized and are interested in becoming Christian.
- You were baptized in another Christian tradition and are considering becoming Catholic.
- You were baptized Catholic but never received First Holy Communion or Confirmation.
- You are Catholic and would simply like to learn more about your faith.
- You are not sure what you believe but feel called to explore the Catholic Church.
What Can I Expect?
OCIA is more than a class. It is a journey of faith.
Throughout the process, participants explore what Catholics believe, how Catholics pray, the Sacraments, Sacred Scripture, the Mass, Catholic moral teaching, and what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
There is also plenty of time for conversation and questions. You do not need to know Catholic terminology, understand the Mass, or have any previous religious education to begin.
You simply need to be open to the journey.
Do I Have to Commit to Becoming Catholic?
No.
Beginning OCIA does not mean that you have made a commitment to become Catholic. The process is designed to give you the time and space you need to learn, pray, ask questions, and discern where God may be leading you.
For those who discern a call to enter the Catholic Church, OCIA provides preparation for receiving the Sacraments and entering into full communion with the Church.
Already Catholic but Need Confirmation?
We would love to talk with you.
Adults who were baptized Catholic but have not received Confirmation, First Holy Communion, or both may also receive preparation through OCIA or another formation process appropriate to their circumstances.
Your Questions Are Welcome
You do not need to wait until you are certain that you want to become Catholic.
Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation.
If you are interested in becoming Catholic, completing your Sacraments, or simply learning more about the Catholic faith, contact Father Kevin McCray. We would be happy to hear your story, answer your questions, and help you determine the next step.
